Back in June I headed off to Florence to document and sample the Sprezzatura of Pitti Uomo the world’s most important platform for men’s clothing. The first edition of Pitti Uomo featuring men’s fashion and accessories was held in Florence in September 1972 and has been held since then at the Fortezza da Basso, twice a year.
I was invited to visit Pitti by my old friend and collaborator Will Shorrocks, creative director of Delight, with the idea of starting a personal project based around the characters of Pitti plus observations of Florence. The gentlemen at Pitti have pea-cocking down to a fine art and they didn’t disappoint. For the 2 days i had in Florence they paraded around the grounds of the Fortezza da Basso giving me ample time to observe their behaviour. I don’t really see this as a one off trip but as a start of a push to shoot work that is not commissioned but comes purely from putting myself in a situation that forces me to make things happen. As photographers we are constantly commissioned to shoot work that fits in boxes, this doesn’t always favour the traditional photographic frame and I want to be able to build a collection of work that doesn’t pander to the box filling culture we work in. I have just updated my personal project from Piti Uomo which can be viewed here.
